Choose Your Goals Wisely

When you list down your dream and your purpose in life and translate them to achievable and measurable goals, you might have written a hundred goals. Don’t worry and don’t panic. That is perfectly okay. At least, you get to choose from among those goals which of them to prioritize and achieve given the short time that you have on the face of this planet.

Inevitably, you have to choose the goals that you want to accomplish in the short term. In the long-run these short-term goals will add up together and they will be instrumental to achieving your long-term goal and your dreams. Take into account the schedule that you want to follow in achieving these goals. If your plan covers only five yearss, then it follows that you won’t choose a goal that will require you ten years before it gets fulfilled.

For this exercise, you might want to choose five major goals, which then become your personal goals. Go back to your long list of goals. Try to combine as many related goals as you want or you can categorize the goals that you have written. If it is your first time to do something like this, then it would be wise to choose five goals for now: five because this number is manageable. It will not overwhelm you.

When you have chosen five goals, write them down in the present tense so that you can be challenged to bring them to fruition. Do not use “will”, “can” or “may” as these may lead you to think that you have the option of not fulfilling them. When you have written these goals, you also need to include the target date for them. With the target date, you are giving yourself a deadline in fulfilling these goals.

After writing down your goals and your schedule in fulfilling them, you also need to take a look at yourself and at your resources that can help you in achieving them. What is the status of your finances? How about your skills and your talents? Do you think these will be enough for you to achieve your stated goals?

Be careful in listing down every single item that you need in achieving these goals. Compare now the materials and resources that you need and those that you currently have. If there is a discrepancy, then it means that you have to gather additional materials and resources to achieve those goals.
